Brief Analysis of the Type and Application of Bottle-Top Dispensers

Bottle-top dispenser is the most common equipment in the laboratory. It is suitable for general acid-base and low-concentration strong acid and alkali and salt solvents. It enables precise and highly reproducible dispensing operations with no wasting of reagents while providing safety assurance for operators and experimental environments.

There are three types of bottle-top dispensers regarding the process solvents, basic, organic, and hydrofluoric. These basically cover all laboratory solvents. The basic type is suitable for a wide range of reagents, including general acid, alkali, and salt solutions, lower concentrations of non-oxidizing strong acid and strong alkali and polar organic solvents (excluding non-polar organic solvents and halogenated hydrocarbons, etc.), such as H3PO4, HCl, H2SO4, NaOH, NaCl, etc. Maximum pressure is 500Mbar, maximum solution resistance is 500mm2/s, maximum solution temperature is 40°C, and maximum liquid density is 2.2g/cm3;

The organic type is suitable for a wide range of organic solvents and higher concentrations of strong acid solutions, such as organic solvents which contain chlorine and fluorine, trifluoroacetic acid, tetrahydrofuran, peroxides, chloroform, HNO3, etc. Maximum pressure is 500Mbar, maximum solution resistance is 500mm2/s, and maximum liquid density is 2.2g/cm3. Hydrofluoric acid type is only applicable to HF solution. Since the glass corrodes by HF, the piston of the dispenser is made from ceramic, and the matching reagent bottle should be made from plastic with a maximum pressure resistance of 500 Mbar, a maximum solution resistance of 500 mm2/s, and a maximum liquid density of 3.8 g/cm3.

The bottle top dispenser is tightly fixed to the reagent bottle through the screw valve, so the removal process of the solution is in a closed system, which avoids the volatilization, splashing, and tipping of the solution and reduces the harm to the environment and humans. It is much safer than the fully open cylinder-type pipetting process. In organic synthesis or petrochemical laboratories, especially in the petrochemical industry, high-viscosity, high-density, and high-volatility solvents are very common. Due to their special properties, such solutions are difficult to remove quickly and are difficult to quantify with traditional measuring cylinders. Bottle-top dispensers are fully capable of pipetting such solutions.
